Allotments

Allotments have been in existence for hundreds of years. But the system we recognise today has its roots in the Nineteenth Century, when land was given over to the labouring poor for the provision of food growing.

The Alresford allotments are located along the quiet lane of Spring Gardens SO24 9QB, bordered on two sides by watercress beds. Many of them look a stunning sight in the growing season and an annual exhibit can be seen at the Alresford Show in September.

They were first laid out by New Alresford Town Council in 2004 and consist of a variety of sizes and shapes.

The charge for an allotment is calculated at 80p per square meter. Due to their popularity the council holds a waiting list where you might have to patiently for up to three years.

However, the design & installation of extra new allotments are under way which will hopefully ease the wait.

There is an allotment committee who liaise with the Town Council. The council pays for water usage, trees and hedge management, ditches clearance and grass cutting during the growing season.
